The Lanes Group has a long track record with the rail sector. It started with drainage services for London Underground in the 1990s. Today, a full Rail Division satisfies major contracts for reactive and planned drainage and civil engineering works to the national rail network, London Underground and the light rail / tram sector. Rail now forms a valuable proportion of our business strategy.
As a CP5 (Control Period) rail contractor, we operate both direct for Network Rail and through other tier one contractors. Our drainage and civil engineering expertise in the rail environment, extensive nationwide resources and award-winning health and safety standards give us the capability to deliver platform-, station- and trackside-drainage projects, wherever and whenever required.
Transport for London
We carry a substantial number of Transport for London (TfL) TPS (Total Purchased Services) multi-discipline contracts for London Underground and Overground. These are managed and executed by our rail operation in Rainham. Through our 24/7 facilities maintenance service, we handle more than 18,500 reactive incidents a year.
Light Rail / Trams
Lanes has been involved in tram investment projects at design, plan and build stages, ensuring that drainage systems on site are fit for purpose and structurally sound. In Manchester, Nottingham, Edinburgh and Blackpool, for instance, this has involved installing CIPP (Cured in Place Pipe) linings to many kilometres of sewers. Once the transport system is operational, ongoing maintenance contracts may involve surveying and cleaning drains and gulleys near tracks, removing waste from interceptors, and unblocking drains on operators’ premises.
